imperative

Imperatives are often commands or orders, expressed as a grammatical mood in English. They are used to tell someone to do or not to do something.

Take a look at this one.

listen to this example

The example above is a request or command for the listener to direct their attention to something specific that the speaker is referring to.

Here are two A2 English Grammar Profile points in different categories that cover imperatives.

Point 39 in the category of CLAUSES is defined:

affirmative imperative with the base form of a main verb

Point 7 in NEGATION:

negative imperatives of main verbs with ‘don’t’ + main verb.

(Uncontracted DO NOT + imperative is B2)

For example:

Now, wait a minute.
Sit down, Zero.

listen

Don’t shoutyou‘ll wake the children.

listen

However, ‘let me/us’ is listed at B2 in the English Vocabulary Profile, meaning:  when you are offering to help someone.  For example:

Let me find you something.

*Note: First and third-person imperatives are formed with ‘let’. ‘Let’ may be the main verb (with the meaning ‘allow’), but ‘let’s’ must be the imperative auxiliary

PELIC STUDENT EXAMPLES:

Include every ingredient for every recipe on your grocery list.

Then, take your list to the refrigerator or cupboard

and check off the items you have on hand.

After, prepare unique food for your guests.

Keep it simple.

2 . TAKE A LOOK AT 40448

In each of these,

the speaker is directing their gratitude towards the listener,

which fits within the scope of imperative mood.

However, it’s worth noting that this is a more polite and less forceful use of the imperative

than when it’s used to give orders or instructions.

However, if the vocabulary is listed at a higher level than A2, we should note the vocabulary level instead of the grammar point.  For example:

Imagine when this all makes way for McKerrow‘s Christmas kingdom.

A Christmas Star

Also note, not all sentences that start with a verb are A2 imperative:

So we started with about 60 grams per day, going up to 250 grams.
Mind youthis was mixed in with 25 kilograms of their feed.

TED

“mind you” can be considered an imperative phrase, but, it’s often used to draw attention to an important piece of information or to add emphasis.
