(slightly | a bit | much) + COMPARATIVE

At A2 in the Oxford Learner’s Dictionary:

a bit [singular] (used as an adverb) (especially British English) = rather; to some extent

Here are comparative examples:

You might need a bit more than that.

Is that everything? I meanit seemed like he said quite a bit more than that.

Now, let’s explain an expert example of the C1 grammar structure: ‘a bit’ + comparative adjective phrase.

Remember that adjectives are often premodified by adverb phrases. Usually, the premodifier is an intensifier.  For example, ‘very good‘ or ‘much better‘.  The adverb ‘very’ intensifies the adjective ‘good’.   (‘Very‘ cannot intensify comparative adjectives.)  ‘Much‘ intensifies the comparative adjective: ‘better‘.

We’ll start with a comparative adjective ‘more complicated‘  as a subject complement at A2 grammar:

a bit‘ is an advanced C1 adverbial phrase that can change the meaning of the comparative adjective to a small degree.

There are other adverbs of degree that can grade like this too:

  • Reality is slightly more complicated than this. (the same meaning as ‘a bit‘ but formal)
  • Reality is much more complicated than this.  (the opposite meaning to ‘slightly‘)
  • Reality is so much more complicated than this.  (‘so‘ makes ‘much‘ stronger.)

But we can also follow the comparative phrase with a noun:

The reason we give different colours is because we are trying to understand what Cambridge says about C1 B2 B1 grammar differences.  This post will attempt to untangle another set of grammar features that are clashing across levels.  The centre of the confusion starts with:

C1 Point 63 in the category of ADVERB phrases which is defined as:

degree adverbs (slightly‘, ‘a bit‘, ‘much) to modify comparatives.

But it clashes completely with B2 Point 57 in the category of  adjectives in the English Grammar Profile which is defined by the adverb:

SLIGHTLY to modify comparative adjectives to a small degree.

And point 63 in ADJECTIVES and comparatives is B2:

‘much’ to modify and intensify comparative adjectives used attributively before countable and uncountable nouns

*Attributive means that the adjective comes right in front of the noun that it is describing.  That means there is no verb between!

And also with Point 38 in Adjectives at B1

‘(SO) MUCH‘ to modify and intensify comparative adjectives used predicatively after a verb, usually ‘be’.

And it clashes with B1 point 50 in Adjectives.
