MORE * THAN (complex comparisions)

A simple comparison in English is “She is more important than you.”

One way to make comparisons more complex is to increase the number of words between ‘more’ and ‘than.’  This could include nouns or adjectives followed by non-finite clauses such as in the following EXPERT EXAMPLES:

Today, billions of citizens have

more tools, more access to informationmore capacity to influence

than ever before.

TED

It‘s harder to compose than to play.

TLC native speaker the UK

At the B2 level, the usual subject-verb types and non-finite types of clauses can be compared.  Here is a similar English Grammar Profile point at B2.

Pearson’s GSE 66 B2 structure is defined as

clause1 + comparative adjective + ‘than’ + clause

Also note that in the English Vocabulary Profile:

A2 THAN used with ‘more’ or ‘less’ to compare numbers or amounts

I spent more than I intended to.
It cost less than I expected.

Therefore, anything more complex should be at least B1. For example:

be more of something than somethingto be one thing rather than another

“It was more of a holiday than a training exercise.”

We fed the following B2 vocabulary from the above results into AI:

concern, efficiently, factor, females, impact, males, nuisance, occur, priority, risk, survive, threat, treat, vitamins, whistles

Here are 10 examples that best explain the summary using the B2 vocabulary:

  1. Concern for environmental sustainability is more of a priority than personal convenience.
  2. Females have a greater risk of developing vitamin deficiencies than males.
  3. The impact of pollution on human health is more significant than the nuisance it causes.
  4. Natural disasters pose a greater threat to vulnerable populations than to well-prepared communities.
  5. Efficiently managing time and resources is a higher priority in a competitive work environment than in a less demanding one.
  6. Survival in extreme conditions requires more than just the ability to endure; it involves adapting to various factors.
  7. Treating mental health issues should receive more attention and resources than simply addressing the symptoms.
  8. The availability of quality medical treatment is a factor that affects females’ access more than males’.
  9. The risk of cyberattacks is increasingly greater today than it was a decade ago.
  10. Whistles can be more than just noisy objects; they serve as important signaling devices in emergency situations.

In these examples, the B2 vocabulary words are used to emphasize the comparative aspect of the statements, highlighting the differences between different factors, concerns, impacts, priorities, risks, and treatments.

This post should really cover ‘less than’ too.
